Finally tried Octopath. The writing wasn't as terrible as I expected, and the battle-system was actually one of the most engaging I've played in a long time (thankfully, it's at the forefront). Verdict is still out on the visuals. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Honestly the writing fluctuates between Pretty Good (Primrose, Tressa, Ophilia) and "Who Thought This Was Okay?" (Hanaat). Just really depends on which characters you work with first.

Brave Hero Yuusha managed to keep me hooked until the desert area. I only quit, really, because I'd just spent a few hours playing, solving the puzzles, grind, etc.
Are you thinking of some other game? Because the desert area is maybe an hour in and there's not much of a grind in Yuusha at all.

The final boss of Brave Hero Yuusha shows up as the bonus boss in Soma Spirits but other than that there isn't a ton of overlap.
All my games from Yuusha onward tend to feature some shared monster or character designs though.
tbh I don't dig elaborate timelines all that much, but I'm all about vague "Are these seemingly irrelevant games actually in the same universe?" stuff.

Oh, you could always name the three characters whatever you wanted, and they're just tentatively Hero, D.Lord, and Princess in the database.

I am curious as to why the names of the characters have changed to classes. If there was a story-driven explanation in the original version, I must've missed it.
